Italian-American Mezzo-Soprano Victoria Isernia is renowned for her sultry mezzo voice, praised for her "good acting instincts," and hailed as being "engaging to watch" (Utah Theatre Bloggers). In the upcoming 2024-2025 season Isernia is set to debut two roles, Judith in Bluebeard's Castle with Bold City Opera and Hansel in Hansel & Gretel with Amelia Island Opera. Recent highlights include her debut performances as Mrs. Nolan in Menotti's The Medium and Musetta in La Boheme with Amelia Island Opera. She was also seen in the role of Autumn in John De Los Santos' Service Provider, a production directed by the librettist himself. Additionally, she returned to the Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre stage in their 2023 Season, embodying roles such as Bet in Oliver! (Nancy Cover) and The Lady in the Balcony (Mrs. Gibbs Cover) in Rorem's Our Town.
Equally at home on both the operatic and musical theater stages, Isernia boasts a diverse repertoire that spans both genres. Notably, she served as a Resident Artist with Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre from 2020 to 2023, leaving an indelible mark with her captivating performances. Most notable of these performances with them being her role debut as Carmen in Carmen in their 2022 season, a significant role debut for Isernia. Her previous engagements with the company showcased her versatility, with memorable performances in productions such as The Magic Flute (Third Lady) and She Loves Me (Ilona Cover).
Isernia is an alumna of the renowned Manhattan School of Music, where she studied under the esteemed Maitland Peters. During her time there, she showcased her talent in notable productions such as Dido & Aeneas (Dido) and L’incoronazione di Poppea (Nerone), both under the direction of the internationally acclaimed soprano Catherine Malfitano. Also while there, she performed in Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, where she portrayed the roles of the Forrester’s Wife and Cricket.
A dedicated interpreter of Gilbert & Sullivan’s repertoire, Isernia has graced the stage in numerous productions of their works. Her credits include performances in The Mikado (Pitti-Sing) with the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, Patience (Lady Jane), and The Gondoliers (Tessa). Additionally, she has showcased her talent through various scene work, embodying roles such as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Mercedes in Carmen, and Third Woodsprite in Rusalka. In 2013, she achieved a milestone by making her Lincoln Center debut under the baton of Maestro Alan Gilbert, lending her voice to the choir in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony alongside the esteemed New York Philharmonic.
Some of her Musical Theater credits include Disney’s Beauty & the Beast (Belle), Bye, Bye Birdie (Kim), Hairspray (Velma Von Tussle), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Rona), and most recently, Sarah in Stephen Sondheim’s Company with the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival.
